In 2003, Muneer Satter was reading a magazine story about former Microsoft China executive John Wood and his Room to Read nonprofit that delivers books to children in developing countries.
"I thought it was interesting and sent him a check," says Mr. Satter, a former Goldman Sachs executive. "John called the day he got the check to say thank you. We talked about what he wanted to achieve and I thought it was remarkable. I started writing more checks and bigger checks. And then, as always happens with John, you get sucked in."
Mr. Satter went on to become a board member and then co-chairman for a time at the organization, which provides books and funds education and library programs in 10 countries in Asia and Africa.
